To help celebrate PARP (Pick a Reading Partner) Week, Wading River School students were in for a special treat reading stories together and guessing who the Masked Readers were at the first-time-ever event. It even included the SWR Wildcat! Special thanks to all the staff, students, and families who joined in on the fun. Everyone left after listening to many stories by our Mystery Readers and with a book in their hand donated by our generous PTA.

Wading River School had a very special Mother’s Day surprise with the quail eggs from Mrs. Klefsky and Mrs. Krandis’s classes hatching last night around 9:30 p.m. “Students were incredibly excited to meet them this morning,” Principal Lou Parrinello said. Other classrooms’ eggs should hopefully be hatching this week, students are watching chicks break through their eggs during the day.

“This is a very unique project where all of our fifth-grade classes incubate and hatch quail eggs, Mr. Parrinello said. “After a few weeks of nurturing, we partner with CEED (Center for Environmental Education and Discovery) where they are raised until mid-summer when they are released into our local woods to help reduce the tick population and replenish native quail.”

Connections to Community: Anna Acker and Alice Steinbrecher

Like many in the Shoreham-Wading River School District, Miller Avenue School second grade teacher Alice Steinbrecher and Wading River School nurse Anna Acker R.N. see a need and want to fulfil it. Together, they know that there is a national shortage of blood and every two seconds, someone in the country needs blood. Since 2000, Mrs. Steinbrecher has been organizing the blood drives at Wading River School with Mrs. Acker.

The dynamic duo attended a dinner hosted by the New York Blood Center to show appreciation and recognition for hosting the biannual blood drives, one in the fall and one in the spring. The recognition event took place at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on May 8.

Some facts that motivate Mrs. Acker and Mrs. Steinbrecher to continue these drives are that one pint of blood can help three people; one out of three people will need blood in their lifetime and statistically 62% of the United States population is eligible to donate yet, according to the New York Blood Center, only 3% donate. Donors are eligible starting at 16 years of age.

“Our last blood drive (held in April) collected 70 pints, which is our average,” Mrs. Acker said. “The next time there is a blood drive, think about donating and save a life. It only takes 20 minutes!”

What’s All the Buzz About?

Right before spring break, Wading River School students took a field trip to Shoreham-Wading River High School for a lesson from students in the high school’s Long Island Sustainability class. The class, under the tutelage of science teacher Mr. Kevin Nohejl, were busy (as bees) all winter building a bee apiary. The beautiful spring day was an opportunity to continue to prepare the outdoor space and share some of the knowledge of beekeeping.

The Wading River fifth graders learned about the importance of bees in our ecosystem while also exploring the new apiary in a powerful and collaborative learning experience. They were taught the safe handling of bees with protective suits and smoke canisters, how honey is extracted from hive sleeves, and visited the apiary to see where the bees will live.

“It was a successful visit as I believe everyone left a little more knowledgeable and got to experience it within our district,” said Director of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Dr. Joseph Paolicelli.

According to Wading River Principal Mr. Lou Parrinello the students were positively buzzing about the visit!

Students in Wading River School enjoyed an educational experience when they viewed the April 8 solar eclipse – safety glasses included!

The students watched the historic moment when the Moon passed between Earth and the Sun, which obscured the view from Earth.

SWR’s resident “Star Wars” fan and the school’s principal Mr. Lou Parrinello, also caught the student and staff excitement at dismissal time during the amazing event!
