Player Honors for Girls Basketball Team

The Shoreham-Wading River High School girls basketball team, who won the school’s first Suffolk County Class A Championship, brought home some individual players’ honors from the Suffolk County Awards Dinner on March 21.

Sophie Costello was named Academic All-County, All-League, All-Conference, All-County and Player of the Year; GraceAnn Leonard took All-League, All-Conference and All-County honors; Juliana Mahan was named All-League; Colleen Ohrtman took Academic All-County and Unsung Hero titles and Annie Sheehan was named Academic All-County and All-League. Coach Adam Lievre was also honored, being named League and County Coach of the Year.

Students Attend DECA State Conference

Shoreham-Wading River High School was well represented at DECA’s 63rd Annual New York State Career Conference recently held in Rochester, New York. Twenty-eight students competed in events in business, finance, entrepreneurship and marketing. Students were required to take exams, prepare presentations in entrepreneurship and professional selling and role play various business situations.

Six students – Ayman Ali, Ryan Cummings, Olivia Diamond, Jacob Formisano, Liam McGuire and Christopher Vignola – were recognized in the DECA National Honor Society, and 12 students received medals for placing top 10 in one or more of their events, with three students placing top 10 overall. National Event winners included Ayman Ali and Sean Dany, who placed second in the state for Financial Services Team Decision Making, and Jacob Formisano, Christopher Vignola and Bryan Vogel, who qualified as Leadership Academy candidates. Five students will move on to represent Shoreham-Wading River at the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Students Explore a Passion for Media

Four Shoreham-Wading River High School students – Kayla Bodenburg, Elise Brooks, Noah Parrinello and Katelyn Roberts – recently attended Adelphi University’s Press Day with English teacher and Journalism Club adviser Sara Trenn.

The news event for high school students is an opportunity for them to explore their passion for media.

Journalism Club member Julianna O’Neill won honorable mention in the Best Feature Article category for the Quill Awards. Her article beat out student reporters from schools such as Jericho, Lynbrook and Roslyn. Katelyn Roberts accepted the award on Julianna O’Neill’s behalf.

Congratulations to Shoreham-Wading River High School’s Ben Wyszomierski and Madison Zelin. Each was honored with an All-County Academic award at the Suffolk County indoor track dinner held at Villa Lombardi’s on March 9.

SWRHS Senior Art in the Community

Shoreham-Wading River High School senior Advanced Placement artist Kristen Tortora was featured in the Art League of Long Island’s GO APE 2023 Advanced Placement exhibition. Kristen’s work showcased her AP sustained investigation with a theme exposing animal cruelty and was titled “Betting on Blood.” It was an acrylic on canvas. At the high school, she works with art teacher Mr. Jason Andria.

The exhibit was on view in the Art League of Long Island’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills. A reception for the artists was held on Feb. 18.
