Prodell Middle School seventh grade students traveled back in time with the Long Island Library Resource Council’s 4-panel display and traveling exhibit: Two Hundred Years on the Erie Canal. The students were engaged with this exhibit and deepened their studies with related resources under the tutelage of librarian Ann-Marie Kalin. The students engaged in some old-fashioned, fact-finding research in the Erie Canal’s innovation, location and engineering as well as key people involved in its development.

Library staff and students also celebrated National Library Month with a multitude of engaging activities including: Stick Together Mosaic, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Guessing Game, Scavenger Hunts, Makerspace - Make-Do and Shrinky Dinks. Additionally, they used the BIG Read program to ignite energy behind several titles to celebrate the Wildcats with Character theme of Acceptance. Books included: Cece Bell’s “El Deafo,” Sharon Draper’s “Out of My Mind,” Gordon Korman’s “Restart,” Lynda Mullaly Hunt’s “Fish in a Tree,” Jason Reynold’s “Ghost” and “An Invisible Thread” by Laura Schroff.

Wildcats with Compassion!

Prodell Middle School recognized Wildcats with Character students of the month for March. The students were recognized for exemplifying the trait of compassion – a trait that Principal Kevin Vann and Assistant Principal Lauren Biscardi find extremely important.

“We commended these students for exemplifying a trait that calls for them to put other people before themselves and to recognize when others are in need of support and understanding,” Mrs. Biscardi said. “We are very lucky to work in a building where students are constantly looking out for one another and helping to protect the well-being of those around them. Prodell students continue to demonstrate compassion on a daily basis and are always looking to help one another and seek out help from staff members when they notice that a student is having a hard time. It really is incredible to witness.”

Congratulations to Angela Accardi, Sonny Alessi, Chelsea De Collibus, John DeSenso III, Tristan Duryee, Ava Emery, Francia Glover, Camryn Guinther, Kaylee Hansen, Ryan Khelawan, Joseph Kneidl, Brooke Lewis, Cailyn Maletta, Harrison McClelland, Easton Miller, Andrea Palacios Vides and Jose Yallup.

District Named Best Community for Music Education

District Named Best Community for Music Education thumbnail256943

The Shoreham-Wading River School District has again been ranked among the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education in America. The honor acknowledges schools and districts across the country for their dedication to and support for music education as part of the core curriculum. This is the fifth consecutive year that Shoreham-Wading River has received the prestigious national recognition.

The Best Communities designation recognizes collaborative, from-the-ground-up efforts of teachers, administrators, students and parents who continually work to keep comprehensive music education as an integral part of the core curriculum.

Each district is evaluated based on funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards and access to music instruction. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and greater access to music education.

“My colleagues in the Music Department continue to do outstanding work with their students,” said High School Concert Choir Director and Music Coordinator Dennis Creighton. “We are just a few days away from the start of our NYSSMA season and this year we will have over 350 solos performed by our students. Concerts continue to deliver outstanding performances and the level of musicianship and musical skill is rising every year. The total number of students performing in ensembles is growing to some of the largest numbers we have had in decades.”

Mr. Creighton also lauded the administration, Board of Education and community for the never-ending advocacy and support that creates the environmental factors the SWR music staff needs to encourage the best performances from SWR students.

Albert G. Prodell Middle School students used STEM principles under the tutelage of technology teacher Mr. David Driscoll to optimize the design and construction of magnetic levitation vehicles when they participated in the annual Brookhaven National Laboratory Maglev Competition on March 20.

In the classroom, the students learned of the competition’s parameters of working to solve the traffic congestion problem on Long Island and designing new transportation systems to address the issue.

They developed a design portfolio to describe what their maglev vehicle would be able to accomplish, the steps it would take to get there, and how they would successfully address each step. The student scientists developed charts, tables and drawings to flesh out their designs.

Congratulations to students Owen Anderson, who received second place in the appearance category for Scale Model; Jordyn Lusak, who received first place in the speed category for Wind Power; Jonah Maraglio, who received first place in the speed category for Gravity; and Aylin Turksonmez, who received first place in the appearance category for Futuristic.
