Right before spring break, Wading River School students took a field trip to Shoreham-Wading River High School for a lesson from students in the high school’s Long Island Sustainability class. The class, under the tutelage of science teacher Mr. Kevin Nohejl, were busy (as bees) all winter building a bee apiary. The beautiful spring day was an opportunity to continue to prepare the outdoor space and share some of the knowledge of beekeeping.

The Wading River fifth graders learned about the importance of bees in our ecosystem while also exploring the new apiary in a powerful and collaborative learning experience. They were taught the safe handling of bees with protective suits and smoke canisters, how honey is extracted from hive sleeves, and visited the apiary to see where the bees will live.

“It was a successful visit as I believe everyone left a little more knowledgeable and got to experience it within our district,” said Director of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Dr. Joseph Paolicelli.

According to Wading River Principal Mr. Lou Parrinello the students were positively buzzing about the visit!

Students in Wading River School enjoyed an educational experience when they viewed the April 8 solar eclipse – safety glasses included!

The students watched the historic moment when the Moon passed between Earth and the Sun, which obscured the view from Earth.

SWR’s resident “Star Wars” fan and the school’s principal Mr. Lou Parrinello, also caught the student and staff excitement at dismissal time during the amazing event!

The Shoreham-Wading River School District has again been ranked among the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education in America. The honor acknowledges schools and districts across the country for their dedication to and support for music education as part of the core curriculum. This is the fifth consecutive year that Shoreham-Wading River has received the prestigious national recognition.

The Best Communities designation recognizes collaborative, from-the-ground-up efforts of teachers, administrators, students and parents who continually work to keep comprehensive music education as an integral part of the core curriculum.

Each district is evaluated based on funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards and access to music instruction. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and greater access to music education.

“My colleagues in the Music Department continue to do outstanding work with their students,” said High School Concert Choir Director and Music Coordinator Dennis Creighton. “We are just a few days away from the start of our NYSSMA season and this year we will have over 350 solos performed by our students. Concerts continue to deliver outstanding performances and the level of musicianship and musical skill is rising every year. The total number of students performing in ensembles is growing to some of the largest numbers we have had in decades.”

Mr. Creighton also lauded the administration, Board of Education and community for the never-ending advocacy and support that creates the environmental factors the SWR music staff needs to encourage the best performances from SWR students.
