The High School offers students the opportunity to participate in a number of sports. At Shoreham-Wading River High School, athletics means more than just playing on a team. Participation in a sport means developing meaningful relationships with teammates and coaches, learning good sportsmanship, teamwork, and creates a solid foundation for a healthy, active lifestyle. Athletic Eligibility Requirements (for students in grades 7-12)
As per Board of Education Policy 7420, Sports and the Athletic Program
(see excerpt below), it is important for parents and students to
understand that when choosing to use your family physician for a sports
physical that the school physician must approve all personal physician
exams prior to student participation. This often requires a multi-day
process to allow for school physician approval which may result in a
student's participation to be delayed. The district does provide
opportunities at the beginning of each season as well as at the end of
the school year for students to get a sports physical from the school
physician if desired. Please call the Athletic Department office at (631) 821-8132 if you have further questions.
Eligibility for interscholastic athletic competition requires that the students:
a) Provide written parental/guardian consent. A consent form for a student's participation in interscholastic sports must contain information regarding mild traumatic brain injuries (concussions) as specified in Commissioner's Regulations;
b) Pass satisfactorily the medical examination administered by the school physician/nurse practitioner or the student's personal physician. The school physician/nurse practitioner retains final approval on all physicals performed by the student's personal physician; and
c) Meet the requirements for interscholastic competition as set forth by the Commissioner's Regulations and the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
