Miller Avenue School K-2 students learned some exciting new coding challenges using Indi robot vehicles.

Library Media Specialist Brittany LaValle and Eastern Suffolk BOCES Models School Coach Carrie McGuire worked with the students in the library to supplement their computer science skills. The engaging activity challenged the young scientists to complete a code sequence to create a square path around a classmate and – a more advanced level – to complete a code sequence to create an infinite loop.

The activities encouraged collaborating, problem-solving and computational thinking skills among the students.

A Step Back in Time

Miller Avenue School second graders in Mrs. Burke and Mr. Korchma's classes enjoyed an exciting field trip to the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, where they stepped back in time to learn about life on Long Island in the 1880s. Students experienced what school was like in a one room school house and discovered daily chores on the farm such as washing clothes, churning butter and feeding farm animals. The children also practiced solving arithmetic problems on slate boards and writing using quill pens, like students 100 years ago. It was an exciting day full of hands-on learning!

In honor of Autism Awareness Day, Miller Avenue School’s Buddy Builders club members were excited to make a difference by crafting beautiful handmade bracelets.

The students worked under the guidance of Aimee Schwabe and Chelsea Tirone in hopes of spreading kindness, celebrating neurodiversity and making a positive impact.

“All proceeds from our sales are supporting SEPTA, helping to promote inclusion and support in our community,” Ms. Schwabe said.

Rock climbing during the school day?

At Miller Avenue School, are enjoying rock climbing, rope climbing, crawling and swinging as the school gymnasium was transformed into Whittle Gym, a longstanding tradition.

Students maneuvered through a colorful obstacle course as they worked to improve their stamina, strength and coordination during the physical education unit. Physical education teachers Josh Bonventre and Katherine Donofrio speak to the students about safety and courtesy before they start the activities.

The course, which features a variety of obstacles to cross, climb and scale, affords students an opportunity to build their core strength while advancing their climbing skills. The Whittle Gym unit also teaches and reinforces many character education skills including working together, encouraging one another, critical thinking, goal setting and problem solving.
