Shoreham-Wading River High School Advanced Science Research seniors Anna Minetti, Julianna O’Neill, Sasha Seletskaya and Katelyn Schaefer took the reins on the recent Science Research Showcase, highlighting the important work they’ve conducted over the four-year program. It was an opportunity to demonstrate the power of taking ownership of their educational journeys to younger students considering taking the exciting and challenging course.
Anna Minetti shared her research on lichens as bioindicators of microplastic pollution on Long Island. Julianna O’Neill ongoing investigation of microplastic contamination in marine snail tissue in Long Island salt marshes was highlighted. Sasha Seletskaya spoke of her chemical characterization of the Northwest Africa 12748 meteorite, comparing it to the Murchison meteorite. Katelyn Schaefer’s work focused on a comparative analysis of pet food plans, examining protein sources, bacterial content and ingredient quality.
The students, who work with Science Research teacher Mrs. Dana Schaefer, shared the process of how they explored and refined their initial inspirations and focus on their specific research topics, clarified their research hypotheses to advancing their research skills while developing greater independence in the scientific process.
The evening also included a poster session in which first, second- and third-year research students presented their year-long work to their parents and other visitors in attendance.
