Middle School Students commit to Living Healthy and Substance Free

Middle School students and faculty joined schools nationwide in celebrating Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s largest drug-prevention awareness campaign. Celebrated Oct. 27-31, the week highlighted the importance of making healthy, safe and positive choices and, most importantly, committing to living healthy and substance- free lives by rejecting the use of tobacco, vaping, alcohol and drugs. Students participated in assemblies, classes and activities that focused on decision-making skills and self-respect.
Students wrote kindness shout-outs to peers and faculty during lunchtime. Alexis Attardi of Outreach, a drug and rehabilitation center, provided pamphlets to students who may know someone who needs help. During health classes, social worker Mary Elaine Gibbo of the Long Island Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, Inc. spoke to students about the effects of smoking, vaping and alcohol on their bodies.
“The choices you make now will impact choices you make down the line,” Ms. Gibbo said. “I’m here to give you information but what you do is up to you.”
To end the week, students welcomed Paralympian, wrestler and motivational speaker Rohan Murphy. He spoke to the students about his journey and living life with purpose.
During the week, students learned that Red Ribbon Week is more than saying “no” to drugs. They realized that they have the tools to pursue positive goals and to stay connected to supportive adults and friends in their lives.
