Wading River Students Attend Performance with NYC Police

It was virtually impossible for Wading River students to remain still and in their places as the New York City Police Department Jazz Band performed a packed program of jazz music as part of the group’s Musical Outreach Program.
The NYC Jazz Band is known for its community and school outreach program and for bringing a blend of entertainment and rich musical history to schools. Their performance of rhythm and blues, Dixieland jazz, Big Band and Latin jazz provided an opportunity for the students to learn about the rich history and cultural significance of the music genre.
The special assembly also allowed the Albert G. Prodell Middle School Jazz Band and fifth grade student-musicians to try their hand at playing with the professional group.
Police Officer and musician John Frammosa also sprinkled a bit of advice to students throughout the assembly. “We lean on you as much as you lean on us,” he said. “You are our eyes and ears.”
Band Director Johan Gil said the purpose of the program is to not only elevate and strengthen the relationship between the community and the police department but to educate students on how this special genre of music progressed in America and to help students elevate themselves as musicians.
