Wading River Fourth Graders ‘Light It Up’

Wading River School fourth grade students extended their knowledge of energy transfer through participation in a Light It Up laboratory with teaching assistant Jennifer Reese. The unit aligns with New York State science standards and explores the transfer and conversion of energy through electrical circuits.
Using a box containing 1.5-volt D cell batteries, size D battery holders, six-inch and 12-inch connector wires with alligator clips, 1.5 volt light bulbs (miniature lamps), mini light bulb holders and a switch for opening and closing a circuit, students and their partners applied scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a circuit that transfers energy and converts it from one form to another.
Not only did the students refine the ideas learned in class, but they also successfully learned to transfer energy through their circuits while having fun. This will be a lesson the students will not soon forget.
