Pharaoh’s Sphero Quest Rolling Through Ancient Egypt

Prodell Middle School sixth graders combined their knowledge of Egyptian and Roman technology with modern technology during a unique lesson with BOCES Model Schools presenter Mara Healy.
Students first examined the periods’ technological and mathematical achievements, such as pyramids, the invention of roads, and ramps and devices to roll limestone. Using Sphero robots, teams of students thinking like engineers were then instructed to traverse the hazards of the classroom, and using block code, to program their robot to move around a pyramid. By building block code on their Chromebooks, the students were able to manipulate their robots’ directions from a starting position (Ankh starting position) to Set (stopping position).
The integrated lesson nicely paralleled the social studies unit on the Greeks and Romans with technology and coding.
