Board of Education Celebrates Students and Staff

The Shoreham-Wading River Central School District's Board of Education meeting on June 9 was filled with celebrations as students, staff members and community heroes were recognized for their achievements, service and contributions to the district.
The evening began with a patriotic performance by the Wading River School third grade USA String Quartet. The group opened the meeting with a rendition of, “My Country, ‘Tis of The.”
The Board of Education then honored its student ex-officio members. Each student shared an update on their post-secondary plans following graduation and was thanked for their dedication and service to the school community throughout the school year.
One of the most meaningful recognitions of the evening followed, as community heroes were honored for their quick-thinking and lifesaving actions during a medical emergency at the Lax Out Cancer game last month. Those recognized played critical roles in securing the scene, ensuring access for emergency responders, performing chest compressions and operating an AED to sustain life support. Emmett Carey, whose life was saved during the incident, was present to personally thank those who came to his aid.
The district also celebrated student creativity through the America’s 250 Art and Essay Contest. Open to students in grades 3-12 nationwide, the contest invited participants to share their perspectives on what America means to them. Director of Humanities Nicole Waldbauer recognized the winners of the districtwide competition for their submissions.
Ms. Waldbauer was then joined by Wading River School Principal Lou Parrinello to honor additional student writers. Together, they recognized students who earned recognition in the Long Island Language Arts Council Kenneth F. Gambone Writing Contest and the Walt Whitman Writing Contest.
At the high school level, students April Haarke and Paige O'Shaughnessy were recognized for earning the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award. In addition, April Haarke was honored for achieving the Eagle Scout Award.
Student Emily Ingrassia was recognized for her outstanding performance at the New York Poetry Event and for having her work selected for inclusion in the New York State Poetry Anthology.
High School Principal Frank Pugliese then honored a group of exceptional academic seniors who maintained a cumulative grade point average of 95 or higher through the second quarter of their senior year. During the recognition, he also highlighted the colleges and universities the students will attend this fall.
Director of PE, Health & Athletics Deb Ferry recognized numerous student-athletes for their post-season awards in their respective spring sports. She also gave special recognition to the Shoreham-Wading River High School girls flag football team, which made history this season by capturing Suffolk County and Long Island championships before advancing to the New York State finals. Ms. Ferry also announced that the high school once again earned NYSPHSAA School of Distinction status, with 100% of its varsity teams receiving scholar-athlete team awards during their respective sports seasons.
Ms. Waldbauer returned to the podium to honor graduating seniors who earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, awarded to students who demonstrate high levels of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English and at least one additional language. She also recognized students receiving the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness, which certifies a student's proficiency in civic knowledge, skills, mindsets and experiences.
The final recognition of the evening celebrated the Shoreham-Wading River High School Tri-M Music Honor Society, which was named the New York State Chapter of the Year.
The evening highlighted the many accomplishments of Shoreham-Wading River students and staff members, showcasing the district's continued commitment to excellence both inside and outside the classroom.
