Celebrating Student Leadership and District Service

The Shoreham-Wading River Board of Education welcomed student voices and celebrated a longtime member of the district community during its Aug. 25 meeting.
Five student representatives were sworn in as ex-officio student board members for the upcoming school year. Lukas Brand, Dominic Costa, Ellie Connell, Lilly Ficken and Shealyn Varbero will serve alongside the Board of Education, providing valuable student perspective and sharing the experiences, ideas and priorities of their peers. Their participation is an important part of the district’s commitment to ensuring student voice is represented in conversations that shape the school community.
The meeting also featured a presentation from high school students Madeline Mayer and Joseph Calandrillo, who shared their plans to establish a new Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) club at Shoreham-Wading River High School. HOSA is a student organization that prepares the next generation of health professionals while providing opportunities for leadership development, motivation and recognition. The students outlined their vision for the club and the opportunities it could provide for students interested in exploring careers in the health professions.
The Board also took time to recognize and celebrate Kevin Vann on his retirement from the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District. Mr. Vann began his career in the district in 2007 as an assistant principal at Shoreham-Wading River High School before becoming principal of Albert G. Prodell Middle School in 2017. Throughout his career, he made countless contributions to the district and touched the lives of thousands of students and staff members. The district extends its sincere gratitude to Mr. Vann for his years of dedication, leadership and service, and wishes him all the best in retirement.
