Sixth graders at Albert G. Prodell Middle School kicked off their middle school experience with two special transition days designed to help them feel prepared, confident and comfortable in their new school environment.

Held on Sept. 3 and 4, the two-day transition curriculum gave students the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of middle school life before fully diving into their regular schedules. Students spent five periods with their reading classes, participating in lessons focused on important aspects of the middle school experience. Students learned about communication, cafeteria procedures, behavioral expectations, managing assignments, using their agendas and navigating new social situations. Students also had the opportunity to become more familiar with the building, including learning how to use their lockers and taking a tour of the school. 

In addition to the transition lessons, students attended their scheduled special-area classes and electives, giving them a chance to experience other parts of their regular middle school schedule.

The curriculum was designed to help ease anxiety and give students and families greater confidence in the transition to middle school.

To add a little extra fun to the two days, the Middle School PTO donated ice pops for students to enjoy as they settled into their new school community.

With new routines learned, questions answered and plenty of opportunities to explore their new surroundings, Prodell’s sixth graders are off to a great start to their middle school journey!
