Wading River School recently hosted the Journeys Into American Indian Territory for fourth graders. The program brought an authentic Native American experience to the students through workshops, exhibitions and interactive experiences.
The students explored all aspects of Native American life with educators Maddi Cheers and Ryan Aparo. They viewed artifacts during a museum presentation, played traditional games and heard stories about the Native American culture, made clay bowls and learned about how the Haudenosaunee government played a key role in helping to shape the United States government.
Students learned about how laws were made and how leaders were elected to their roles. They were then separated into groups and were presented with a situation in which they learned to come to an agreeable solution.
