Inspiring Tales from Paws of War

Inspiring Tales from Paws of War thumbnail262590

Shoreham-Wading River High School students learned of an organization that is “helping both ends of the leash.”

In an assembly program for 11th graders on Nov.15, veteran advocate Mike Kilano shared his story as a Marine field radio operator in Iraq and the aftermath of war. The marine turned his combat-related PTSD challenges into a mission to support others with Paws of War, a Nesconset-based operation that aids service members, first responders and military members.

The Student Government class, under the leadership of teacher Erica Scully, and with the assistance of social studies teacher Ann Gianfalla, welcomed Mr. Kilano to hear inspiring tales of the helping heroes’ program, veterinarian clinic, service dog training program, animal rescue program, therapy dog program and other essential services to assist our country’s heroes.

The class also presented Mr. Kilano with items collected during a schoolwide collection including shelf-stable dog food, paper towels, water and food bowls, puppy pads, pet shampoo, training treats and more.
