Shoreham-Wading River School District’s Director of STEM Dr. Joseph Paolicelli shared numerous high school enhancements and upgrades at the May 7 Board of Education meeting. Dr. Paolicelli noted that the goals are to increase student depth of experience with new technologies, increase authentic hands-on, student-centered activities and connect technology to students’ creativity.

Dr. Paolicelli then thanked Shoreham-Wading River High School technology teacher Jacob Sigerson for bringing the initiatives forth and taking the lead in improving the hands-on experience for students. Mr. Sigerson, in turn, presented an overview of the school’s World of Technology course and the various projects that students have been working on throughout the year.

Topics for the project-based course include engineering projects, flight and transportation systems, the foundation of technology, hydroponics, metals, plastics, robotics and wood projects. The students have created the District’s 50th Anniversary Time Capsule, planter boxes and more. Students Emily Miltz and Pat Morano, both juniors, shared the unit on drones, demonstrating a mission that incorporated some of the programming concepts the students learned in class such as using variables, loops and logic.

The students then presented each Board member with an acrylic, multicolored light with the SWR logo that was created with the new, industry-standard laser cutter/engraver.
