Albert G. Prodell Middle School seventh graders recently transformed their classroom into a dynamic recreation of the Second Continental Congress through a powerful student-led learning experience. The immersive simulation allowed students to take ownership of their exploration, demonstrating remarkable historical understanding and civic engagement.

Students delivered phenomenal speeches that captured the intense debates and critical decision-making of the Revolutionary era. “What impressed me most was the students' incredible initiative,” teacher Julia Matera said. “They didn't just learn history—they lived it, researched it, and brought it to life entirely on their own terms.”

The simulation culminated in a historic moment when students, after passionate discourse, voted in favor of independence – echoing the momentous choice made by the original delegates in 1776. This innovative, student-driven teaching approach not only brings history off the pages of textbooks but also empowers students to understand the complexities of political decision-making and the weight of transformative historical moments.

Social studies teacher Danielle Senneca warmly acknowledges the supporters who have helped preserve the Radicals and Tories simulation as a cherished educational tradition in the Shoreham-Wading River School District.
