Shoreham-Wading River High School students Anna Minetti, Julianna O’Neill, Sasha Seletskaya and Katelyn Schaefer were honored by the Shoreham-Wading River Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Mr. Gerard Poole at the Dec. 10 meeting. The four scholars are the second cohort of students to each submit a Regeneron Science Talent Search application on behalf of the research they have conducted.

Anna Minetti studied lichens as bioindicators of microplastic pollution on Long Island. Julianna O’Neill investigated microplastic contamination in marine snail tissue in Long Island salt marshes. Sasha Seletskaya performed chemical characterization of the Northwest Africa 12748 meteorite, comparing it to the Murchison meteorite. Katelyn Schaefer conducted a comparative analysis of pet food plans, examining protein sources, bacterial content and ingredient quality.

The students, who worked with support and encouragement from Science Research teacher Mrs. Dana Schaefer, follow last year’s applicants and 2024 graduates Derek Blanco and Dongkai (Alex) Zhang, who made Shoreham-Wading River history with their entries.
