A sweet surprise greeted members of Shoreham-Wading River School District’s Board of Education trustees at their Aug. 27 meeting. Each Board member was gifted a jar of honey, courtesy of the High School’s apiary. Students in the Long Island Sustainability class and science teacher Mr. Kevin Nohejl took care of the beehives over the summer, and one overly productive hive was responsible for the special treat.
The rigorous course of study in the inaugural year of the program tasked students with the design of the habitat and monitoring the health of the hives, learning along the way the full responsibilities of maintaining a beehive.
